If lasting value is a major consideration, I'd stick to something Japanese if you want new... econoboxes don't tend to have good resale value but of them the Japanese entries tend to do best... although the Focus has been holding out quite well.
For maximizing your dollar over time, I'd consider something three years old under a CPO warranty, like a Mazda3 or a Civic, maybe even a Fit. Either would be a great use of cash and meet all of your goals. Fact: Engineers love Hondas. :D
If new is a requirement, the Focus is a fine car, but *personally* I think I'd go for the Fiesta. Little smaller, a little cheaper, and not much loss of practicality in the process. I'd probably also look an Elantra or a Forte - both a fair amount of car for money. They may not actually drive as well as a Ford, but for commuting appliances they are tough to beat at their price. Hyundai/Kia have been enjoying some pretty good resale value as of late, so they are probably as safe an investment as the Ford. For slightly more, you could also check out the Veloster - what it lacks in manners it makes up for in niftiness. ;)
