On newer BMW (not 10 year old) the charging system is an on demand type with learning capabilities so when the battery gets older, it teach the alternator how much to charge.

If those adaptive values are not reset when a new battery is installed, it could technically damage the new battery from overcharging.

That doesn't mean it happens all the time but when the stars are all lined up, it could happen.

Saab have their specialties too with killing the ICM in the early Sport Sedan if the battery was not replaced in proper ways removing the key first and so was the early Volvo S80 killing the Climate Control Module if the battery was ripped out before the car had gone to sleep.

It doesn't happen all the time but that does not help the person stuck with a $1000.00 + repair bill because some yahoo changed the battery the wrong way.
