to work on, and the Jetta/Golf/Beetle/A3 have transverse mounted engines vs. longitudinally mounted engines in the larger cars. But my experience is that VW/Audi crams a lot of stuff under the hood and "simple" jobs require peeling off several layers of parts to access what you need to; as an example, to get the the coolant temperature sensor you must remove the intake ducting and PCV hoses (which are likely to crack due to age).
I'm also concerned about various "cost-engineered" parts, i.e the plastic thermostat housing on my A6 was a change introduced that year vs. previous years that used a cast aluminum piece - plastic warps and eventually leaks significantly. Both of my cars had broken rear springs, a not-uncommon issue and something that no other car I have owned suffered from.
On the other hand, one huge positive for DIYers is the availability of VAG-com, a laptop based diagnostic tool that has most (all?) of the capabilities of factory diagnostic tools.
