Most things I have done have been very easy and logical. Coolant change, for example, is by far the easiest I have done. BMW uses higher grade metal for their fasteners, so you seldom have to deal with rusted bolts, etc.

Obviously, sophisticated electronics are a little more involved and you need to do your research. It is easy to do, though, because community support is excellent. Many modules are available for retrofit and can be a lot of fun to play with. For example, you can retrofit iDrive into a 3-series that does not have this option installed from the factory. Etc, etc.

Bentley repair manuals are great, as we all know. There are also electronic factory manuals you can get pretty easily online (look for BMW TIS.) Diagnostic cable is about $20 -- search for BMW cable on eBay. Higher quality cables are available for slightly more money. Diagnostic software is readily available online, too.
