I've owned BMWs and always had great respect for them, even though I preferred Saabs' approach to things. But in recent years BMW seems to have lost it's way and for some reason seems prone to a lot of bone headed decisions--almost like GM used to be. Every time I read a road test on one they rave over the car but then have this long list of things wrong. It's kind of like those drug commercials where they start listing the side effects and you find yourself thinking you don't want anything to do with that. And you hear enough maintenance horror stories that would give me pause. I've said it before but I think all the European manufacturers have lost their way. The days when they were designed for longevity are long gone and the long term ownership approach many of us have used so successfully with our Saabs is no longer a viable option--at least not with German cars. They do make some lovely cars--I just don't think I'd want to own one much past the warranty. And when you factor in that they no longer have any real advantage in terms of fit/finish/materials or vehicle driving dynamics, it's hard to make a case for owning one. I'd consider leasing one and maybe buy one if I didn't drive too many miles, but I'd bail for sure by year five. There are too many other options these days.
