Many European cars use sophisticated computer networks. SAAB was the first manufacturer to switch to CAN bus, by the way. BMW is certainly not better or worse in terms of complicated electronics compared to other European car makers. However, this does NOT mean that the system BMW uses is a black box! There is extensive documentation readily available to anyone with access to Internet. All software necessary to configure and access various computers is readily available for download and the hardware necessary to use it is very, very low cost. One can completely program any new BMW model, including 2014, using these commonly available tools. Yes, there is a learning curve, which is part of the fun.

I am not disputing that a battery replacement on new BMW models requires more than just swapping the battery. Yes, you need to "marry" the battery to the controller. However, there is a very good reason for this. It is possible not to do this, but could lead to problems down the line. No doubt, new BMWs are sophisticated cars. But I disagree that it makes them worse or less reliable. People used to say the same thing about fuel injection in the 80s. I LOVE fuel injection. Yes, understanding it requires reading a few books. But it makes cars much more reliable. Same goes for modern car electronics. Personally, I don't miss having to troubleshoot electronic problems using a multimeter. I greatly prefer using my computer.

By the way, try replacing a battery on a Mercedes. Bring money (if you do it wrong.)
