I probably didn't get the absolute best deal but the price wasn't horrible either. They did a 5-10 minute diagnostic when I walked in the door, then ran through the list of all proposed work and associated costs prior to accepting my machine.
One of the items was a verification that my old machine was capable of running Windows7. If the machine was determined to not be capable then I was only on the hook for their minimum bench fee of $35. Based on the processor in our machine they felt fairly sure it could handle Windows7. I suspect if a machine was a real antique they wouldn't even accept the customer's machine to try it.
I checked the price of Windows 7 Pro at MicroCenter after reading your post since there is one of these stores close to my former employer. Yes, I paid a little more than deeply discounted price for the O/S but not enough to make me feel bad. Plus, I had researched what would be required to do the XP to 7 conversion a few months back and did not feel confident to attempt this myself.
The store carries lots of new legacy components as well as used legacy components for customers with old machines. A sign they may not be focused on maximizing profits on every transaction.
