So yes... I agree with Jersey Saab in that I've never had cable (since moving out on my own): 95% of the time, there is nothing I would want to watch on cable that I couldn't find elsewhere, and I have better things to do than to watch tv.
However, I also did as Adam suggested and gave away our CRT and replaced it with a modest LED TV. The LED is wall mounted, so it saves space, is easier on the eyes, better picture (our CRT was not a high end one because I don't value TV), uses way less electricity, and a heck of a lot lighter and less tippy (a good feature when young children around). The clincher to rationalize the purchase was that it cost (waaay) less than a year of basic cable including buying an antenna (our antenna cost $15 and gets us all we need)...
the only thing we miss compared to others who have cable are some sporting events - having all those channels gives more options in that regard and the none of the specialty sports channels are available over the air, only via cable. Those channels are winning more and more of the broadcast rights vs the main networks. Quite annoying. Not everything is online - yet. Otherwise, cable is useless to me!
