I killed my TV service in 2003 - I got tired of the cable bill that started at around $50 in 1995 and slowly crept up to $80 or $90. That was different services and different service levels, but still, in 2003 ~$1000/yr could have better bought a bunch of Saab parts. ;) I kept my internet, which at the time was $30/mo for DSL, but is now $60/mo for 20mb fiber.
I have not once regretted turning it off. There are a bunch of conversations I can't participate in and I can't fill anyone in on what happened, but I spend a LOT less time sitting around and I get a lot more done. I do have Netflix and Amazon Prime, so if I feel the need to watch something I can, but putting an end to an easy habit means the itch to watch TV pretty much doesn't exist 10 years later. I watch something when I want to see something, rather than watching something when I can't think of anything better to do.
That said, my parents were really anti-TV when I was a kid. I had strict allowances for TV most of growing up, and between time and approved programming I often couldn't participate in conversations even back then. I gotta admit, that was rough. Being a kid and having a significant social connection that was simply not part of life was sometimes really unpleasant. I have no idea what part of life TV is for kids these days, but I somehow believe not a huge amount has changed. My point being, saving money is great, and giving kids something better to do than TV is great, but don't forget that seeing something on TV extends to social conditions in the future. Cutting kids off from that can kinda suck.
My $0.02.
