I run my own IT business and cover a few people still using Windows 98 and 2000. They are frugal, but smarter folks, careful users, and none have managed to become infected or destroy their machines in spite of the lack of security updates from MS, and they are connected to and using the internet. I don't recommend it, just citing examples.

Other clients, no matter how much protection they have and how new the operating system infect themselves, the worst of them mess up their Apples.

So my opinion is that these security updates although potentially helpful don't necessarily protect many of us from the most common threats people find to get themselves into trouble.

If you stick with XP, just maintain some sort of antivirus protection and a few reputable anit-spyware programs. Decent free offerings for AV include AVG, Avast, Avira, Panda, et al and I like the older Spy Bot 1.62 and Malwarebytes to supplement the AV.

...and don't use Internet Explorer. Firefox with adblock plus would be my choice ahead of Chrome as an alternative browser to IE.

I don't think its money well spent to "upgrade" (ahem) an xp box to Windows 7 or 8 unless it is equipped to do so, and most XP boxes lack sufficient ram, large enough drives and processor speed to run the new Windows properly in my opinion.

I don't like windows 8 but can tolerate it provided I install one of the free offerings that restore the Start menu.

P.S. I run everything from Windows, Mac OS and Linux myself, but I refuse to upgrade because someone tells me I must... says this guy who likes and drives old Saabs ;)

Cheers,

Steve
