Well put. As much as I'd prefer to not play the forced upgrade game, there is no choice. XP hasn't been a good idea for quite some time, and shortly after April 8th it will become a very bad one. XP was never a very secure OS, it was never a great idea to expose it to the internet. The best AV software is only about 90% effective, and after that you're relying 100% on safeties built into the OS, and in the case of XP that's bloody close to zero. I wouldn't do it and certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone in 2014 (or 2010, for that matter).
Get 7, or get 8. They are both good - albeit in different ways. 8 is quite a handful to grasp (I'm still struggling with it a little), but once you get used to it I think you'll find it's responsive and intuitive. It runs great on an Atom-powered tablet I have, so it should be just fine on older hardware like a C2D E6000. *Personally*, knowing that 7 is about halfway through its lifecycle right now I can't see choosing 2014 to be the year to start investing in 7. Were it me, I'd make the leap straight to 8 and know that my effort now is going to have a longer payoff. 8 is way past the teething stage and works great. You don't need a touchscreen, although it's a nice thing to have. It's just fine with a mouse, and you could always invest in something like the Logitech Gesture Mouse to get close to the experience.
Just some thoughts.
