Hello old friends, those who knew you were and didn't. I am in mourning today as I am about to dispose (I will buy a classified Scott) of the last swede in my stable. It has been a great journey and I have more automotive memories that involved these cars then didn't.
Monday I purchased a BMW 335d, to replace my 9-5 AERO and besides the break neck torque I felt when I rolled on the throttle of this beast, something corny happened. I immediately was taken back to my very 1st drive in a SAAB turbo some 20+ years ago.
I was reluctant but excited to find a black 900 turbo for sale at a local used car dealer with considerable # of miles. I knew nothing of these cars and being mechanically inclined and about to become a new Father and needing an affordable, reliable, decent looking automobile I went. When I arrived at the dealership I was disturbed to find a not so impressive dealership. The stereotypical dealer with cigar in mouth walked me over to a black saab 900 with a grey body kit and no badging? he started the car and I heard that sound...if you have ever heard a classic 2.0 turbo you know the sound. i said to the guy with as straight of a face as i could muster "I don't know, I am really hesitant at buying a Turbocharged car, you know how unreliable those things are?" I proceed with the test drive and as I put it in 1st gear and start out over the grass to the edge of the road (with window down) I just couldn't wipe the smile off, that sound! I pulled out on to the pavement and started accelerating, shift in to 2nd and notice I have a truck bearing down on me I floor it....the rest is history...
i soon learned that this strange 900 Turbo with no badges was actually a 1985 900 Turbo SPG, man I drove that car everywhere, any excuse to go somewhere, all the time. Addicting as it was i ended up selling it here on saabnet to another up and coming saab nut (still friends today).
Since that day I have owned 85 SPG 74 Sonett, 86 9000, 89 SPG, 91 9000T, 99 9-3, 2000 9-5 Aero.
I have happily racked up an impressive 330K+ miles on my Aero and not knowing what to do, I have held on to this car longer than any other, 11 years to be exact, 300K miles driven on this 1 owner lease return. No regrets.
I have been on saabnet since the early 90's (doesn't seem that long ago) and I came to rely on the boards for guidance, repair information, friendship, humor, news, advice. Just about a daily visit for so many years! I even helped start the high mileage registry and have had 3 saabs on that list with 250K+.
Scott has done such a fantastic job with this site and may have contributed to the longevity of my saab ownership. Sorry that saab took the turn that it did and has ended my long history with these fantastic vehicles.
I am sure I will enjoy my 335d, if you get a chance, drive one, you will not regret it. (sorry :-))
