When I moved to the US in 1997, I lived across the road from a gas station (Columbus, OH). Gas at the time was $1.03 a gallon. Today 17 years later it is $3.69. That is a 7.8% annual price increase over the years.
Another more verifiable price is a local gas station was forced to close in 2003. It listed gas at $1.38. To get to $3.69 in 11 years, it is an average of 9.4% annual gas price increase.
News article on the gas station for reference - see link
The point being that the break even analysis is based on zero gas price increase over the next 6 years. If you layer in 7.8%, gas will be $5.79 a gallon. At 9.4%, it would be $6.32 a gallon. (Gas in Ireland is $7.43 a gallon today so $6.32 in 6 years is quite plausible)
