My wife has a Volt and also a very short commute (~4 miles). The 240V charger can charge her car in about 4 hours but usually that's irrelevant since it charges at night while we're sleeping. A full charge will get her to work and back with plenty to spare.
Your commute would be tougher, unless you could get your employer to install a 240V charger. With a 120V charger the car can take 10 hours to charge.
Of course one thing to keep in mind is that once the battery is "dead" it's not completely discharged and the car still functions like a hybrid - using the gas engine but still capturing and reusing energy via regenerative braking. On trips where she's completely or mainly used the gas engine, my wife's still gotten 45 or more MPG.
The one "dirty little secret" the manufacturers don't like to mention is the range drops considerably in cold weather. In the summer, my wife's car can easily go 40 miles on the battery if driven conservatively. In 20-degree temperatures in the winter, it's more like 25 miles.
