There is no security working for someone else Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Wed, 25 Jun 2014 05:28:54 In Reply to: Just can't seem to catch a break, JonInAtl, Wed, 25 Jun 2014 04:40:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Don't let it get you down.
I used to work at DEC back in the day when the computer field was referred to as EDP (Electronic Data Processing) rather than IT.
DEC was a great company to work for 30+ years ago when they were riding high, the 2nd largest computer company in the world but with a unique corporate culture that was very unlike most companies. (Unlike Steve Jobs, who was basically a huckster, DEC founder and chief Ken Olsen was a true pioneer in the field of computing. Ken drove a Ford Pinto and didn't have a reserved parking space!)
I did the salaried 60-80 hour week thing, all nighters, traveling, etc., but had no problem with that. It never felt like an imposition. Unfortunately the company starting faltering badly in the early 1990s for a variety of reasons and went down the drain, being acquired by Compaq and ultimately by HP. By the time things started going bad I'd made enough contacts to go into my own consulting business. That was over 20 years ago, and while it's had its ups and downs I've never looked back. I could not imagine going back to a cubicle. At this point I am "semi-retired" and work part-time, or at least try to.
Although there are certainly hassles to deal with, in the end there's nothing like being your own boss.
In 2011, PBS did a program about Ken Olsen and DEC that is currently available for online streaming. Here's the link for anyone interested...
