I have been on both sides of the fence, employed and self-employed, and can tell you there is no Nirvana. Go look for another full time gig, but also look at freelance options. You're in IT so there are plenty of freelance, project based gigs. Go online to search it out. Freelance project-based work may enable you to have multiple revenue streams --work from several companies-- that can keep you busy when one project ends and you're waiting for another to start up. There are companies that operate as clearinghouses for FL gigs in many fields. They take a commission of some type, but can connect you with companies you wouldn't find otherwise.
Having been an employee and self-employed, I think self-employed is generally better, assuming you're cut out for it and have the necessary mental toughness, but outside forces beyond your control can still rain on your parade. It is hard to do everything: sales, marketing, the work you're hired to do, accounting, upgrading your office equipment, dealing with taxes, health insurance, etc. And some people feel isolated when not in a traditional office environment. But in an IT gig, you may find that you go to an office each day, which you may find attractive.
Use your experience to show what you can do and differentiate yourself from others. Believe in yourself. It's not your fault you're on the street. Some drone made a corporate decision. Move on. You'll be fine.
