While I generally agree with this strategy, westernny had posted before about this and his car is a relatively unique colour I think - it's some kind of mica red metallic or something that is a wine colour iirc. So yeah, if the door was black, red, dark green, or silver, this would be a cakewalk, but he will need to cast a fairly wide net in his search I think to find a nice condition (ie not rusting) door in the right colour. I would still try that route first.
Another small thing - with some colours (normal red in particular!) they can fade a lot, and the amount of fade can be highly correlated with the time spent in the sun... so a garaged car may not match a sun drenched junk yard door... though with some work to remove some outer layers of paint and waxing, the colour may come back enough? This metallic might hold up better in that regard.
I agree though, avoid painting costs if possible! And if they do paint, make sure they keep the original saab primer and just overspray with some effort to ensure good adhesion. Normal body shop paint/priming is nothing like the original SAAB paint in terms of durability and tenacity!
