Depending where you live even though you get solar gains in the winter that would be blocked by low-e coated glass, you have to remember that there is only a few good hours of sun in the winter. Far more time spent without sunlight in the winter... and of course in the summer, the same low-e glass will block out the heat you do not want to keep the home cool. Triple pane glass with inert gasses and high R values will pay for themselves over time, but are much more costlier than the stuff on the shelves at the home store. Vinyl is nice because its a low conductor, but it is pliable and can warp when the material gets heat over time. Some vendors now use fiberglass frames which is stronger and a low conductor. Others will reinforce the vinyl with aluminum or steel... Wood frames aren't great because the expand and contract (opposite of what you really want loose in the winter tight in the summer).
