I've had progressive lenses for 30+ years, and commonly take them off when reading and doing close work. It's important to get the vertical position of the lense in the frame correct, a little too high or low can help or hinder closer vision. Also found having the bottom of the lense tilted back towards the face can help with stairs and bench top work.
Couple years ago had cataract surgery with the implanted lenses set for reading, (not commonly done) since I do a lot of reading and some close electronic stuff. Will always have to use glasses for distance, but continue to take them off for reading and close work.
