but it's only and illusion.
I buy used and keep cars a long time. Do most of my own wrenching. The complexity of modern cars, along with the apparent practice of building them just to last through the warranty period without breaking makes me very nervous about buying anything. I'm sure some are quite good, but are not worth the money to me.
And leasing is flat out stupid unless one thinks renting a car for the rest of one's life makes sense. Paying few hundred a month for a fancy new car sounds great. Until you realize it goes on forever. Unless I have to buy tires I spend <$1000 a year/car on any of our four Saabs. This year all four cars cost us 3 batteries, two serp belts, 1 alternator, 1 exhaust, four pulleys, two sets of plugs, a few filters and a few oil changes. A few dozen hours of work spread over the year. Pretty cheap. Average mileage on them is 187.5K. One got winter tires this year--they'll last 6+ years. One got summer tires. Will get 4-5 years out of those. And all four cost $2500 to insure and register (thanks to a couple minor events in 2013).
New cars are really nice. But just ain't worth the money, IMHO. Not my money, anyway!
