Maybe. I still find it hard to say a new car is longer lasting, where it hasn't been around enough to know. Many new car buyers who say that don't keep a car long enough to know. It is true that drive trains usually last longer nowadays, but electronics and interiors maybe not. There is a certain amount of planned obsolescence with the electronics! Rust for me is the biggest reason to drop a car because we have so much salt. Average new cars seem better in that regard than average old cars (eg comparing 2005 to 1985 Honda Civics), but I'm not so sure with some of the higher end makes. SAAB/Audi/Volvo etc have lots of galvinization now, but (maybe as a result) the paint does not stick as well, and it is thinner, and the metal is thinner. So when it does start to go, it goes way faster! c900/9000 original paint was very tenacious vs the spread of rust (an excellent primer). A tiny paint bubble on the 9-5 rear fender dogleg was the tip of the iceberg - I had about a 1/4" perforation hidden in there and the car's only 10 years old! And many interior fasteners on that car are broken/need replacement. The c900's are mostly held together with screws for better or worse, but in 25 years, there's less loose stuff and interior wear than 10 years with the 9-5... I really noticed that shopping used cars... but again, I'm not looking at the average cars, so you are probably right. They probably are better on average. I'm kind of an outlier in terms of buying habits and length of ownership. There is probably quite a bit higher % of 80's/90's saabs still on the roads than similar vintage fords or hondas (at least in the rust belt!).
