I was in my favorite liquor store this evening for another bottle of this weekend's dinner wine Camile Cayan Gigondas 2011, and the subject was bourbon at the counter. I'm a fan of Buffalo Trace, but there are a lot of boutique bourbons at very high prices.
Last week's Wall Street Journal (12/8) had an article on guys hoarding bourbon. my guy said Pappy Van Winkle 23 year old is going for $400 a fifth on ebay, wholesale cost is a lot less than that (the 10 year old 107 proof version is only $42 wholesale but sells for twice that or more) and it is just an allocation issue. One brand he showed me was $300 a bottle, 119 proof. It is so hand made that the proof varies from barrel to barrel and they write it in by hand!
Everybody is hoarding bourbon since Suntory bought Jim Beam, Knob Hill and Makers Mark with an eye towards increasing exports. Maybe everyone should recall the Dutch tulip investment disaster and have a shot of Hornitos Gold!
