Too much Chinese stuff - true, and they certainly aren't the only retailer with this concern, but they definitely were the biggest muscle in letting the Genie out of that bottle. They completely revolutionized that trade stream, greatly simplifying the flooding of the US market with Chinese product.
Putting the screws to suppliers and competitors - true, but maybe that's just capitalism (or more accurately, the free market) at work.
I'm not advocating $35/hr for all their workers, but...
Approximately 5,000 law suits are filed against Walmart every year. The majority fall into the categories: Exploitation of Workers, Wage Law Violations, and their Anti-Union Stance.
Wal-Mart did just announce a wage hike to a minimum of $9/hr. Many states already have min's of $10 or more, and many more states are in the process. Wal-Mart has a 44% turnover rate for their hourly, so this token pay hike is them just trying to get a little good PR from something inevitable.
Their pitiful health care for employees force many to be unable to pay their hospital bills. The states and the US Gov't then pick up the tab.
There's plenty wrong with Wal-Mart, enough for me to not shop there.
Ed
