Stainless vs. stainless Posted by ELaw [Email] (#699) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ELaw) on Wed, 11 Mar 2015 06:55:41 In Reply to: Newer Audis come with stainless exhaust - standard, Bill Homer [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 10 Mar 2015 14:54:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I think her car (an '04 A4 quattro) came with stainless from the factory, and the OE replacement system is stainless.
The good news is that OE stainless systems are 400-series stainless which lasts a heck of a lot longer than regular steel. The bad news is it's not the same as most people think of as "stainless" like a kitchen sink, which is usually 304 stainless which is much more corrosion-resistant.
Here in New England the 400-series stuff has a lifetime of about 10 years if used in the winter. I've got a catback system on my 9000 which is 400-series, it's about 12 years old (two of those years were spent in FL), and is close to needing replacement. I've also got some 304 stainless parts on that car and I expect them to last forever.
I think some aftermarket systems claim to be made of 304 stainless, but I'm skeptical of whether they're *entirely* made of 304. Sometimes the pipes will be 304 but the mufflers will be 409, and so on.
