Maybe in the driveway I could see not clearing it and packing it down, if there's enough snow to form a good base. Very often on Long Island there isn't. I wind up with icy spots, clear spots and packed down spots. The real problem comes in when the driveway is clear and I get some melting or a light snow that kinda melts and then that moisture freezes again. I have a blacktop driveway and I've seen skating rinks that were easier to walk on. So I stay on top of it, this year I used calcium chloride, it worked well. I dont put it on my front walk it will destroy the mortar holding down the blue stone. I shovel and sand there. I had a plumber in and asked how much $$, I havent had a reply yet. And yes, if I can talk my neighbor into installing radiant heat in her driveway it would certainly help me a lot. I have mentioned it to her.
