Yup, hardly anyone checks their spare. I saw some poor girl in a parking lot last weekend who had clearly just put on a spare that was mostly flat.
I try to keep mine checked somewhat enough and also carry my breaker bar and lug socket in the spare tire well along with a spare belt and various other repair stuff. It's a fair point that probably 90%+ of people are going to have a flat spare, stuck lugs, and/or a complete inability to change a tire though. If you drive long distances, rural areas, or travel at night I do like the security of a spare though.
What I wonder about, we're all used to seeing idiots driving on a donut for weeks at a time, how many people are flying down the interstate right now with a deflated runflat or with a tire held together with a bit of green goo.
