The anode can go back with lots of Teflon tape.
I could not budge the anode with 1/2" impact wrench at max compressor pressure. Took a construction guy with a pipe extension on a long wrench to do the job. You need someone holding on to the tank so it does not walk away and damage pipes. Do not drain the tanks too much as you need the weight! When anode is moving, drain the tank more before removing the anode as water continues to drain back from the house.
Without shutoff valves, you have a challenge too. Drain the tank and see what you get first. You can put the time and $$$ towards a new efficient tank as well.
