I second the vote to look into portable. Unless you are unable to move a portable generator and start it, it is by far the most cost effective solution.
I looked into a permanent standby propane unit and with install it was going to be around $7,000. I bought an 8000w portable gas one for about $750 and had an inlet and lockout switch installed for around $300.
Have been using the unit for about five years now in Maine winters (and summers) and it runs the whole house and will also go fully overnight or all day on a tank of gas (6 gals).
I have also used it to power construction equipment at a remote site to build a building, another benefit over a permanent unit!!
