I have done the upgrade on a half dozen machines of varying power, but a very low-end Pentium-powered 2-in-1 convertible to a Core i7 desktop. All were Windows 7 or Windows 8, no Vista machines. I've not had a single one do anything weird, all upgrades completed remarkably quickly and without incident. I had to roll back one of them - my personal laptop - as it turns out my VPN software is ancient and not compatible with Windows 10. That's on me, I should have checked that before I started the upgrade. Oops.
I was not anti-8 like it seems lots of folks were - it was not great, but fine. I used it in some places and kept 7 in some places. 10, however, seems downright wonderful. All the leanness of 8 with solid UI features and a number of improvements on 7. I think they did a superb job hybridizing the Metro interface with the Windows 7 start menu, the notification panel is excellent, Cortana works wonderfully even with a crappy built-in webcam mic, and the easy-access search bar is right up my alley. The UI switch from regular to Metro on convertible laptops is fantastic. I imagine 10 is going to positively superb on a Surface.
I am sure folks can find a lot of reasons to complain about 10. People invariably find ways to complain about whatever is new. Stuff on the net is downright preposterous - people complaining about privacy settings (which are presented to you the first time you boot it, duh), people complaining about Solitaire not being included (download Microsoft's or someone else's from the Marketplace, duh) and all manner of things. Whatever.
If you don't like change, don't upgrade. If you're up for a new look and re-evaluating the way you use the computer and are open to the idea that maybe doing it differently can result in improved productivity, I'd absolutely give it a go. It's very good. As soon as I upgrade my firewall I will put it back on my laptop, leaving only my main desktop running 7. I always like to have one legacy computer kicking around just in case. ;)
One thing: On my super-low-power convertible using Edge ("Internet Explorer 12") Saabnet is basically unusable. I don't know why, it's impossible to type an entire sentence without massive lag and losing characters in the process. It's very weird as Edge has been flawless everywhere else. You can always use Firefox or Chrome, I just don't. I like the cloud integration of MS's services (which I'm sure someone will complain about for stealing all my stuff. To those people, I recommend reading the fine print from Apple, Google, and MS and *then* comment on who is stealing what).
My $0.02, YMMV. :)
