After reading this thread I actually just went through the exact same thing. I was backing into a tight spot with an overgrown stone wall behind me in a Altima, which like most new cars has terrible rear visibility and absolutely no visual indication of where the rear of the car is, and didn't see a small foot-tall section of the wall that jutted out of one portion. This put a few small scrapes in the bumper. Obviously my fault and I should have been more careful. The damages was maybe a little deeper than yours, but also lower down where the bumper curves back in, so less noticeable. At check in, the lady barely looked at the car and printed my receipt. I might have gotten a little lucky as the lady checking in the guy next to me was giving him a hard time over a 'scrape' he was describing as 'sap or something' and a mark on the roof, but of which seemed like total non-issues from the very quick glance I made. My car also had some damage in the same area I scraped when I picked it up, so it may well have already been noted as having damage in that area anyway, and I also rent 10-15 times a year from this company so maybe they cut regulars some slack. I'm guessing it's all a bit of a crap shoot, and a bit of an arbitrary line over what's normal wear and tear for a bumper versus damage. Maybe some polishing compound will help on yours. Just don't do it right before you return the car so there's a big clear shiny spot around the damage :)
