I use a 4.5 x 8 utility trailer for hauling yard waste to the dump and bringing topsoil and mulch home. I don't know what the trailer weighs but have hauled about 2500 pounds of top soil, which I'd say is definitely at or above the limit. And that was for just a few miles. Did that with both wife's 9-5 wagon with the auto box and my 9000 with a manual. I just felt like it was really pushing the envelope and wouldn't want to have that kind of load on for a distance. Puts a lot of stress on the engine and driveline, brakes, etc. And you have to drive with some extra care.
A tandem wheel trailer would definitely be over the top as the trailer alone is going to 1500 or so.
It depends on how much you'll be using it. Sometimes renting a truck is just easier, and you don't have to worry about service, insurance, etc. One approach could be renting a truck when you need to haul a big load, then have a small, open utility trailer for lighter loads. You can wrap them up well with a tarp and a Saab can easily haul the small trailer. We will be doing this next year ourselves so we have a trailer at our second home. Move the big stuff with UHaul, then have a trailer for convenience. Our next door neighbor at our second home hauls a utility trailer up from Massachusetts every spring, and back in the fall, with his Volvo wagon.
