Yeah, I know that's cynical, but it seems to be largely true.
I recently worked for company that promised a lot when recruiting me, but fell far, far short of delivering. The agreement was sufficiently vague that they could get around it. And the guy who hired me and created the agreement --my boss's boss-- disconnected himself from the folks further down the food chain, so was of no use in trying to adjust the situation. It soon became clear that they had sold me a bill of goods --my bad for not seeing through their smoke and mirrors. It was a pretty unhappy place to work and when they restructured and eliminated my position it was great news. Now I'm happily self-employed again.
Assuming the politics can be worked a bit, your wife probably needs to let the dust settle for a few weeks, then see what she can negotiate. Most companies, especially smaller ones, are willing to make concessions at an individual level, especially for proven performers.
And I hear your wife's comments about people who only work a few hours a day. That would be my former boss and the boss of a colleague. Both were remote and probably worked about 20 hours a week. But we 20+ year veterans in the company and could do no wrong in a company full of lifers.
