Some companies regularly hire older workers and try to retain their older workers. My present employer fits into this category. They hired me at age 57, and last year one of the Structural engineers finally retired at age 80! Another of the Civil engineers confided in me that he has been designing concrete structures since the 1960's. I didn't ask his age but he is clearly in his 70's with that experience.
My previous employer worked hard to forcibly clear people out once they hit their mid-50s. I saw the hand writing on the wall and knew my name was on the top of their disposal list simply because I had 36+ years of seniority. I resigned via their retirement process and started looking for a new job as soon as I gave my 4-1/2 months notice.
