We had this happen, sort of. The company used to be a lot more
flexible, but now it's "work 8 hours here, and be here between 10AM to 4PM".

Part of it was abusing the freedom to set hours -- people were slacking
off. Part of it was also folks who couldn't work from home (production),
complaining that the people who could work from home (Software Developers),
had an unfair advantage. My boss's comment was "Well go get a degree
in engineering", but they don't listen to him.

Even with this there are a couple of employees that have made arrangements
with their supervisors for adjusted hours. One guy with the commute from
hell is only in the office 4 days a week, and works from home 1 day.

The company does make a lot of adjustments for child care -- people
with kids just can't keep working when day care is closed [1].

What do do in your situation? I guess as a new employee put down a
solid track record of good work, then try to negotiate more flexible time
directly with your supervisor.

[1] Which makes me wonder why the heck employers don't want older workers.
My kids are thousands of miles away fending for themselves, and as
much as I love my wife working late or having to travel for a week or
two isn't a huge hardship -- not like the guys (and gals!) with little
kids were that sort of schedule disruption can't happen. Plus we're
usually very good at what we do. Go figure.
