With only around 57K sold in the U.S. since 2012, the Tesla Model S continues to be a rare bird but the Model 3 which is expected to go on sale in 2017 at a much lower price, starting around $35K, should be the brand's "break out" model. Its success or failure will depend a lot on where the market is as far as technology, competition, etc. at that point and going forward. Even then, EVs will only be a small fraction of total vehicle sales.
