Most of them are barely better than using a stick with a nail in it to play your records. Flimsy plastic plinths and platters, heavy-tracking tonearms with high-friction bearings and cheap low-compliance cartridges.
Most of today's inexpensive turntables are pretty awful, even worse than the old VM and BSR changers that so many cheap record players used to come with. As I said before unless spending huge dollars on something new a refurbished vintage unit is going to be a much better way to go. (Compare the build on a current USB turntable to something like a Dual, Elac Miracord, Pioneer, or even a Garrard.)
I'm a pack-rat too -- even still have the black-and-white RCA console TV that I watched the live reporting of the JFK assassination on. Lots of old tube stuff here - it will still be usable after the EMP if you can find a way to power it up!
