Yeah, my comment was mostly tongue in cheek, as few people are willing to part with enough cash to buy a half-decent SPG, to instead buy a relatively entry level audio system (yes, $4400 is entry level for Naim/Harbeth).
I do not like lossy formats, though they are unfortunately common place. FLAC is my preferred format. Bill is right in that the things in the music that make it feel more alive and real on higher end equipment, are mostly wiped out by lossy formats like MP3. The upside of MP3 is smaller file sizes, the downside is information loss. Some MP3's are encoded better than others.
You probably could wrangle some older moderately nice hifi for about $300 used (NAD, Cambridge, etc). That said, it is not easy under the $300 price point.
In addition to the normal computer options, you might have some luck looking at relatively inexpensive (or used!) active studio monitors. These are generally aimed at being fairly neutral sounding and reasonably powerful in a musician's "office" environment. Here's a basic sort of overview: http://www.sweetwater.com/insync/studio-monitors-buying-guide/
So, maybe something like this might meet your needs: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MR6mk3
