gearing makes a pretty big difference. In principle, a CVT could be setup for various modes, but performance oriented shifting uses more fuel. That's the thing I noticed with many Japanese rentals a few years back - they get good fuel economy by always trying to be in top gear, which makes them pretty jerky to drive (hunting around constantly for the right gear). I suppose done really well, that could work smoothly and well with a CVT.
I had pretty poor fuel economy in the 2009 forester we rented with the 2.5L and no CVT. About 20mpg highway (with a ski box). The newer ones might be better.
As always, an extended test drive (rent one for a 5 hour drive on a road trip) will tell you much more about the car (seats, handling, fuel economy, visibility, performance qualities)...
