I can't imagine the CVT is a worse transmission than the preceding 4 speed automatic Subaru used in basically all their cars. That thing was awful. It was geared for fast off the line performance in a NA engine that lacked low end torque. As a result, first gear was a waste. Basically used from 0 to 10 mph only. Every gear was short (narrow power band). As a result, normal highway cruising speed (70mph) in 4th gear was too high an RPM... People here mock the c900 3 speed autobox. The Subaru 4 speed had the same highway cruising RPMs and resultant mediocre highway fuel economy, but with less responsive shifting than the c900 3 speed (hunting etc). That thing was awful. So I can only imagine that the Subaru CVT would be a dream in contrast.
The rule of thumb though for Subies (like c900's): Drive a stick! oh, and get a turbo... that you can still get a suby with a stick is awesome and probably one of their bigger appeals.
I don't think any of the Subies look "vanilla". They look like Subarus. There is a certain distinctive look... it's might not be very beautiful to look at (maybe a utilitarian beauty), but there is at least some uniqueness of style... Subaru deserves credit for that... I suppose the magazines need to kind of fill some blanks to make the pros/cons equal...
