Wow! I have not seen an Excel in many years, they mostly rotted back into the earth a long time ago here in the salt belt.
I had a similar thing happen in my '97 Saab 9000. The original alternator was bad (bearings were shot/noisy as well as low output) but after I replaced it symptoms like yours occurred. It turns out a small green wire going to the alternator had corroded at the connector to the point of uselessness even though it looked OK on initial inspection.
I don't know what kind of alternator is used on the Excel but particularly since the car is well over 20 years old (and a model not particularly known for its durability) I'd carefully check the wiring.
