Correct, non clear coat paint in much thicker and more resistant to the elements that the color coat of a base-clear coat job.
The disadvantage to not having a clear coat (in addition to not allowing metallics) is that the color will fade and oxidize over time, however you can polish that out!
On a clear coat car, the clear coat is responsible for all the protection so the base color coat is very thin and designed to adhere to the clear coat rather than stand up to the elements.
