I think you do have a good level of tolerance. You are right that if your timing is flexible, there are usually ways to deal with the situation. A bit harder if you're 100+ miles from anything, but patience is key... We burnt a valve once in a c900 without much warning (maybe 20 minutes warning before it really went) - luckily close to our destination, but even so it was a bit of work to get it sorted properly with the closest SAAB shop 100 miles away.
I do carry tools. I have a spare fuel pump and fuel pump tool in the back of the 9-5, along with some small simple parts that can go seemingly at random (eg cps, even a set of green rollers). Mechanics wire, fluids also. Probably could change out the fuel pump before going, but the car was bought used and the old one might not be too old... Maybe I should swap them and save the old one at home as a spare... There's more opportunity for something unusual to go wrong on an older car but any car can have a roadside hangup... eg we drove over a nail in a brand new Subaru rental that set us back a few hours once (fortunately the flat was discovered in a convenient place near a tire shop so I didn't need to drive far on the donut). Having a tool kit is handy though - just to have a few basics makes a difference.
