This is interesting to me, because I look at it exactly the opposite way. Commuting in an old car is difficult - sitting stop & go traffic, unexpected construction delays, sucking up hot air from cars all around you, short distances with lots of starter cycles, and increased personal risk from tired & inattentive drivers all packed in together screams "new car" to me. The best electrical system, the best HVAC system, the best safety systems.
Out on the open road? Easy cruising at 60-90mph in one gear? That's cake. Fewer cars, little to no congestion, constant motion making it easier to regulate temperatures with windows and less worry about a stuck-in-traffic overheat. Less stress on the car and less worry on my brain.
When we take a road trip, it's almost invariably in the '99 Suburban (190k) or the '86 XR4Ti (290k). Sometimes it's the '85 SPG (260k) but the aftermarket seats in it kinda suck for long distance driving. With rare, rare exception the newer cars stay at home. I also feel a lot less bad adding <.5% miles to the Suburban than I do >1% to the 9-3 or XJR.
We take at least a few good trips a year - whether it's 1,000 miles to SoCal 1-2x or 200-400 miles to Reno or the Bay Area every other month. It's rarely longer than that, though Portland, Seattle, and Denver have all come up.
I'd not think twice about a 400 mile trip in the XR4Ti. I did it last month (Santa Cruz) and I will do it next week (Fresno). For a 1,000 mile trip, I will definitely check the oil before we leave though! :D
