As tire tech advances, more and more tires may morph into the "all-weather" variety which are distinctly better than all-season on snow and ice. A good alternative for the northern us or Canada where it's optional to drive on those bad snowy days. The main caveat now is that they should be replaced at 5-6 32nds whereas the summer tires of a summer/winter tag team can be run a lot lower partially offsetting the cost of running 2 sets of tires and rims.
