It's the "euro" size socket that used to be pretty common, I know Mercedes and VW had them too, not sure about the other brands or when/if they changed over to a standardized size. You used to be able to buy the adapter sleeves pretty readily. Not sure if they're still available though but worth a look. Otherwise there's various tips and tricks available on the internet, like a few wraps of electric tap around the device, etc.
