Newer cars seem to all have them. They look like an add on to me. Like a design afterthought. A big fat glaring screen sticking up in the middle of your dashboard. Not that ive researched a lot of cars, but Audi and Mazda for a couple, they do not fold down? Darn near obstructs your view of the road. Why wouldn't you have the option of having it retract into the dash or at least fold down? Answer. because folks are more interested in gadgets than a driving experience. That's like sitting on your couch and expecting a rollercoaster ride. Same reason I wouldn't buy a '03-'06 Saab 9-3, hated that glaring info thing on top of the dash. '07 forward much better. End of rant.
