What do they use as the feed stock?
Back in the 1970's there was an effort in the US to build coal gasification plants to generate a slightly lower BTU content methane fuel to replace Natural Gas.
My Dad served in the South Pacific during WWII and he told about Australians having giant bladders in rooftop cargo carriers on their cars which contained some type of low performance gaseous fuel to power their car engines.
I think gasification involves partially combustion a carbon rich feedstock and capturing the products of caution which still contains a lot of hydrocarbons
