Geothermal is imho the way to go in very cold climates if you have the space (or can drill down) to bury a coil. In more moderate cold climates, air to air heat pumps work well enough if the building envelope is tight and well insulated and represent the better value (geothermal is expensive to install but necessary vs air to air in locations where it gets very cold).
