I was in a similar situation several years ago and decided VOIP would serve the purpose of having a “home phone”, which my wife wanted, and keeping a long-used number. I would have be fine with eliminating the home phone completely. There are many VOIP options and we chose Ooma which has worked well. For about $8 a month we get our old number plus and additional number that can use any area code. We also get 911, call waiting, call forwarding and voice mail. You can mark numbers as spam to avoid repeat calls but the spammers seem to have an endless supply of numbers to get around that. The Ooma equipment is pretty cheap and the wireless handset displays the incoming number and location, and announces the name of the caller if identified. I am not sure about connecting to wired phones throughout the house, but I believe there is a way. As for reliability, we rarely have power or internet outages and they have never lasted more than a couple of hours. But as a precaution, I have a UPS power supply that will keep the cable modem, wireless router and Ooma box running for hours if the power is out but we still have internet service. You can also have Ooma ring your cell phone or multiple cell phones simultaneously with your home phone so you can answer your home number wherever you are. I read some bad reviews about VOIP services before switching, but I have never had a problem in over three years. You can get it even cheaper, maybe $5 a month, if you don’t want 911 and all the other features.
