After 25 years of paying for a landline, we ditched it a few years ago and just used our existing cell phones. We had been using the cell phones almost exclusively regardless for work, relatives, etc. Mostly junk calls on the landline number. My wife was the one who didn't want to get rid of landline for a few reasons such as 911. I have it set up on our cell phones and have no worries. We were paying $625 per year for that landline number the last few years, and I wish I could have a few years of that money back when we were primarily receiving junk calls. It can seem tough initially shutting down the landline number if you're used to such a thing your entire life (I'm 59). I no longer even think twice about using the cell phones for everything. Just had to chip away at any vendors where we had the landline registered and switch it to one of the cell numbers. In case of extended power outage, all of our phones are recent iPhones with very good battery life. Could always go out and plug in to one of the cars to charge if needed. Not many power outages where I live these days. I had also looked into VOIP using our cable / internet provider, and then thought why bother.
